RV Information (My required daily reading)

  • Van's Aircraft The center of the RV universe.
  • Van's Airforce Doug Reeve's maintains the World Wide Wing and has tons of information and inspiration.
  • Van's Airforce Forums Doug Reeve's has created a web-based set of RV Forums. He intends to replace the Yahoo Boards with this. It's new as of December 2004 but growing.
  • The Matronics RV-9 List There are also Matronics lists for other RVs and even non RV builders and for the Matroncs product line.
  • Yahoo RV-9 Board Worth checking out periodically even with the clunky Yahoo interface and advertisements.

RV-9 Builders (An arbitrary list I enjoy and turn to for help, information, and inspriation)

  • Mike Hoover - Mike is building kit number 90709 and my kit is 90702. He lives about an hour from my brother's house and is doing some fine work assembling his kit. Mikes site has really been improved during 2004.
  • Warren Hurd Anyone that names their cats Cleco and Rivet and ponders the Zen of aircraft construction while buiding an RV-9A can't be all bad.
  • Vern Little British Columbia must have more builders per capita than any other place on earth. Vern is one of BC's builders.
  • Bill Repucci Bill has an aircraft factory in his basement too. He's quite a bit ahead of me and located in NC. His site details his work and opinions well.
  • John Spicer A builder to the north of me.
  • Ray Swanson Another RV-9A builder in Richmond, VA at almost the same stage of building as me.

Builders who have completed their RV (mostly since I started building)

  • Todd Bartrim In late 2003 Todd completed a flying 9A powered by a Mazda 13B rotary engine. (Flying)
  • Matthew and Sandi Brandes Matthew is an RV 9A builder that views himself as a simple man. He says his wife disagrees and my guess is she's right. Simple men don't have web cams or modify plane plans to extend fuel capacity. We'll we were neck and neck but he's pulled out way in front of me now. At one point we were at about the same place in our assembly process and then I met the woman of my dreams and Matthew finished his RV while I took care of more important things.
  • Tim Coldenhoff Interesting commentary, helpful techniques and good photos of a 9 nearing completion. Another builder that finished while I was building.
  • Brad Hiatt An repeat offender building an RV 9A after completing and selling an RV-6. Good stuff and lots of photos.
  • Chris Heitman Another 2003 completion. Perhaps I should spend more time building and less time surfing the web and updating this site. (Flying)
  • Andy Karmy Andy's site documents construction of his recently completed RV 9A. Refreshingly frank. (Flying)
  • Clay R. In addition to a well documented construction process, Clay has photos of most completed RV 9s and current constructon notes and photos. (Flying)
  • Mike Schipper I discovered Mike's this summer (05) and he has a knack for taking pictures that answer questions I'm inclined to ask. He also has found the same problems along the way that I've found (just recently the longerons don't fit in the slots Van's cuts in the bulkheads). Very helpful site.
  • John and Vivian Rotunda John and Vivian are documenting their work on a 9A quick build and have lots of good photos and interesting descriptions. (Flying)

Other Interesting RV Sites

  • Sam Buchanan Sam's web site has a lot of solid information and tips with a touch of humor. He built his 6 quickly and shares the 'secret' of good planning. Build the plan in your mind then do it for real.
  • Gert I don't have a clue who Gert is. He might be kin to the boy named Sue but with an inclination toward aviation. He posts on the Matronix list regularly and has a web site with information on anodizing, a pneumatic dimpler and several RV modifications.

Local Associations

  • EAA Chapter 231 It probably doesn't count as therapy if all you get is encouragement for your addiction. Meetings are the 2nd Friday of the month at 7:30 at the Aviation Museum.
  • Mid Atlantic RV Wing Another Yahoo Group. I'm working on one of my dreams - flying to a MARV WAM in a plane I built.

RV Accessories (and gadgets I'm considering)

  • Affordable Panels As you might expect, Affordable Panels makes aftermarket instrument panels for RVs. You just tell Van's you won't be needing the panel and you'll get a $24.75 credit when you buy your fuselage. For either $265 or $295 depending on which panel you order, you can get your new panel from these folks. It's modular and should make upgrading easier. You can also let Van's keep your plastic vents saving you $35 and buy aluminum vents for $278/pr. If you figure out where the affordable part comes into play, let me know. I'm just getting the panel.
  • Aircraft Extras Several interesting RV options including a tipup modification for the sliding canopy.
  • Attaway Air ECI experimental engines (a Lycoming clone) and accessories for RVs by another RV builder.
  • CreativeAir Check these guys out before settling on your plane's lights. Again, another RV builder selling some of his better ideas.
  • Dynon Devleopment A $2,000 replacement for the AH that provides a wealth of data and can provide redundancy...but VFR only, imo. Upon reflection, a $2,000 VFR only replacement for your AH doesn't make logical sense...but it's still very cool.
  • Grand Rapids Technology This is a link to their new website. It's an improvement over their old website and in the final analysis I'd have to say they're putting their time into EFIS development not website development (good priorities, imo). I'd like to put 2 units in so I can have the EFIS and the graphical EIS simultaneously without having to split the screen.
  • InAir Instruments, LLC I think this is a one man outfit that makes a better than average Lift Reserve Indicator (very similar to an Angle of Attack Indicator but not quite the same) that's reasonably priced. Sam Buchanon has reviewed the product and I can't add a thing to his words of wisdom, yet. The owner is building an RV-6 and loves talking with other RV builders so be sure to mention if you're building an RV.
  • SteinAir They have quite a list of goodies for the hombuilder (including EFIS's, Avionics, Auto Pilots and a lot of neat electrical stuff). Stein Bruch is also an RV builder.
  • TruTrak An incredible value in experimental autopilots. There's no doubt one of these, hopefully the basic 2 axis unit, will grace my panel....and they interface with the GRT EFIS and darn near any GPS unit - even handhelds.
